UP DILIMAN
CORPS OF SPONSORS
THE PAST IN REVIEW
In 1912, the same year that the Military Training, the precursor of the present ROTC program, was incepted in the University of the Philippines, female students of the University were selected and recruited to serve as the Muses of the regiments, battalions and companies of the UP Corps of Cadets.
When Military Training had been redesignated as the Philippine ROTC Program, the ladies organized as Muses of the Corps were redesignated as the UP ROTC Corps of Sponsors (UPCoS). By that time, they had become a social adjunct of the Corps of Cadets in various areas.
As history marched on with the Pre-War, World War and Post-War eras, so did the legacy of the UPCoS flourish. With the establishment of the Commonwealth, the UPCoS trained as part of the Women's Auxiliary Service. In 1949, the Corps of Sponsors was established in different U.P. units like Los Banos and Baguio.
In 1968, the Sponsors went through special warfare training via the Rainbow Rangerettes, a brainchild of former Sponsors Lorna Verano-Yap and Tina Escueta. From the sixties onwards, the special military training of the Sponsors continued, as did their participation and involvement in civic and social action. They have come up with various cultural activities, fund-raising campaigns, and socio-civic projects, all geared to the benefit of the young, the aged, the infirm, and other disadvantaged sectors of society. Since then, they have responded to the call of National Service, in various ways demanded by their particular times.
Simultaneous with these activities was their participation in, and support of, University activities and affairs. They have always rendered ushering services at the Lantern Parade and University Commencement Exercises, to name a few.
The U.P. Corps of Sponsors began mainly as a group of muses of the Corps but through the years, it has continued to strive, mature and evolve. It is proud to number among its alumnae many illustrious names in various fields of Philippine society.
THE UP CORPS OF SPONSORS 2009
We are women with different identities, with different stories to tell from different colleges but we are united -- are the UP Corps of Sponsors 2009.
Before we started our term, a seminar was held to orient us on things that we had to know about the Corps and the Department of Military Science and Tactics (DMST). We were also briefed on the experiences and activities the Corps of Sponsors has been involved with through the years. The basics, like knowledge about military discipline and courtesy, which kept the respect and strengthened the foundation we have started, was also introduced to us.
And so we started off on this journey together. Since our Presentation of Sponsors, we have carried out, one by one, the various projects and activities that we planned for the entire term. Most of our projects' object were set to respond to the needs of society.
The first project that we successfully finished was the Re-HABITalization in cooperation with the Habitat for Humanity to help build homes for the homeless. This was followed by the Tree Planting for a CoS done at the UP Lagoon grounds to promote environmental consciousness. Other socio-civic projects, held to address the eneds of those whose wellness we are concerned about, are the Tawa Muna, an outreach activity for children diagnosed with cancer, Araw-araw ay Pasko, a gift-giving activity for orphans, and Home Sweet Home, a party for the aged residents of Coalition of Services of the Elderly in Bulacan.
To support these worthwhile projects, we held fund-raisiing activities. The first was Okay-Ukay, a rummage sale at Krus na Ligas Barangay Hall. This was followed by a Back-to-School Raffle and Hala-Bi-Run, a fund(d) run project.
In addition to these various projects and activities, we established a harmonious relationship with the cadets and cadet officers as we worked with them in supporting the plans and programs of the DMST. We are also involved in ROTC advocacy projects, such as UP Corps of Sponsors Exposed, a photo exhibit heeld at Palma Hall, and various Residence Halls in the University, as well as an audio-visual presentation to promote UP ROTC entitled UP ROTC wants YOU!
As students of the University, we also seek to serve both the University and our fellow students. To address the needs of the students to feel safe and secure, we will participate in the University Student Council's Alternative Classroom Learning Experience by setting up a discussion and practical application of self-defense entitled I am My Own Hero!
We have also provided the University with ushering and crowd control services. Though difficult and demanding, these details let us experience the privilege of meeting prominent people in the University and society, and we enjoyed taking part in the University's major events. These events inclued the Gawad Parangal sa mga Mag-aaral at Retirado, Gawad Chanselor, and the UP Diliman Commencement Exercises.
But what makes us most different from other organizations is the special training that we are given the chance to experience. We made the most of opportunities to train in public speaking, rappelling, self-defense, marksmanship, water training, first aid, etiquette and ballroom dancing.
As we faced challenges and difficulties on our journey together, great friendship was created. Together, we struggled; together, we celebrated. Despite being busy with various projects, training and ushering details, we still find time for recreation.
In the UP Corps of Sponsors we discovered our own individual potentials, and the experiences we were privileged to have in our term helped us maximize and develop them. We have become conscientious women of society -- responsible, disciplined, dedicated.
We might have had different reasons for joining the Corps, but now we have the same reason to continue what we have started -- honor, excellence and service!
WHY BE A SPONSOR?
Being part of the Department of Military Science and Tactics, the UP Corps of Sponsors are given free instruction and hands-on experience in such special training as first-aid, marksmanship, water training, rappelling, self-defense and martial arts under the supervision of the Department of Military Science and Tactics.
Sponsors act as mediators between the cadets/cadettes and cadet/cadette officers, ensuring that a healthy and professional relationship is maintained. As the sounding board of the cadets/cadettes for whatever problems they may face during their ROTC training, they play a unique role in ensuring morale. They also support activities of the UP Corps of Cadets.
The Corps of Sponsors is the only student organization regularly requested by the University to usher at various campus activities and events; thus giving Sponsors the glamorous chance to gain polish and poise as they interact with well-known figures in Philippine business, politics, and civilian society.
As a socio-civic organization with projects geared toward community service, Sponsors work together in conceptualizing, planning, and implementing, projects that benefit worthwhile charitable institutions and causes. Each Sponsor gets the chance to spearhead at least one project during her term, bringing out her capabilities to effectively manage time, resources, and personnel.
If you are invited to be a Sponsor, you are being given an opportunity to discover new things, undergo exciting activities, make new friends, and be part of an honored tradition that goes back over 80 years.. are YOU ready to meet the challenge?
